Vestry Class of 2022-2025
Jim was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, moved to Twin Brook, and then to Aspen Hill with his family. Jim graduated from Robert E. Peary High School and went on to get an AA degree from Montgomery College. Jim worked at McIntire Hardware in Rockville, Maryland until he was 21 when he started in the construction industry. Jim went into business for himself in 1983 as a Home Improvement Contractor and has built and renovated many homes in Mt. Airy and surrounding areas. He has three daughters and eight grandchildren and married his current wife Patty in 2006. He started coming to St. James’ in 2009. Jim has served as an Usher since 2010 and joined the Outreach Committee as well. Jim was selected for the Vestry in 2012 and became Jr. Warden because it was a natural fit, as he has the needed experience and no one else wanted the job. But that was ok. The funny part was when George Winters asked him to join the Vestry, George said the Vestry had a special job for him and Jr. Warden was his destiny. When Portia retired, Jim supported the effort to pick an interim Rector and was there when the Vestry selected Kristin Krantz as the new Rector for St. James’. Jim left the Vestry in 2018 but continues to contribute by helping with many tasks for the Church community.
I have lived in Mt. Airy for 7 years with my husband, Andy and two children
(Jack – 4, Nora – 10 months). My husband and I met in graduate school at the University of Georgia and moved back to Maryland shortly after graduation. What attracted us to St. James’ was its sense of community and love of family. We immediately felt at home here after our first visit. I have been active in the youth group for the last couple of years and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to work with them on their faith journey. Also, this past year I have worked with Kristin in leading the Confirmation candidates classes which I have enjoyed a great deal. Professionally, I have been employed at Morgan Stanley in Baltimore for the past 8 years where I am the Director of New Accounts Operations. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and I love to be in the kitchen trying out new recipes. In the coming months I am going to be transitioning to a new chapter in my life, and having the opportunity to stay at home with my children, and I cannot wait. I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve on the Vestry, and helping others to feel as welcome as my family.
My name is Gabrielle Markham but everyone just calls me Gabby. I am 35 years old and I have an amazing daughter named Abby . I love to crochet and draw and listen to Abby play music. I work at an at home daycare; it’s a job I find it very rewarding . On Easter in 2019 we attended services at St. James’ and never left. I am so proud to be apart of this spiritual community.
Cheri grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland where she started attending a local Episcopal church, Church of the Ascension in 1991 and volunteered with the Sunday School program. She moved to Mount Airy in 1997 and attended Grace New Market where she served on the vestry and one term as church auditor. She started attending St. James’ church in 2003. She has served on the vestry with St. James’, on the Rector search committee, and one year as Senior Warden.
Cheri is a recent graduate from FCC with an Associates, Honors in Business Administration degree and works full time for a National Engineering firm in Ashburn, Virginia as an Administrative Manager.
Cheri and Tim have two children Bryce (22) and Trevor (20) and a furry four-legged daughter Flower (3). In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time at her getaway in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Vestry Class of 2023-2026
Ashley grew up in Prince George’s county attending St. Mark’s Catholic church and school. After moving to Montgomery county, she attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and then The George Washington University. Floral design taught to her at a young age by her grandmother would eventually lead her into the world of flowers followed by Master Gardener training and National Garden Club competitions.
Today, Ashley is an award-winning designer and owner of her own floral design company. She primarily works for clients in the equestrian-sporting world creating landscape & floral designs for hospitality & competition spaces. She has liaised with world-renowned course designers and admits she will always be a student of the craft to which she is so dedicated to. “Botanical Art” is her penultimate focus where one-of-a-kind installations come to life for trade-shows and galas.
Ashley and her husband Ty moved to Mount Airy in 2014 and started attending St. James’ after sending their children to St. James’ Nursery School. They live on farm north of the church and have 5 children; JT (12), Penny (10), Daphne (8), Marshall (6), and Flynn (4) to help tend to the 47+ animals in their menagere. Ashley has served on the Flower Guild since 2015, been chair of the Memorial Garden since its creation, and served 2 terms on the Nursery School Board (holding the position of Secretary for both terms).
Rainey was born in St. Louis, MO. At the age of 4 she moved from North Carolina with her mother and sister to Gaithersburg, Maryland. Soon they became a family of 5 after her mother’s marriage and the addition of three more sisters. Rainey enjoyed active participation in the Presbyterian Church throughout childhood and adulthood prior to moving to Mt Airy.
After graduating from Seneca Valley High School, Rainey moved on to earn a degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Administration from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a masters degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University in New York City.
Rainey and Steve came to Baltimore where Rainey worked first as a staff PT and eventually as Director of OT and PT at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (okay, Rainey admits that she is old enough that it was Francis Scott Key Medical Center when she started there). Rainey has practiced physical therapy in various settings around the Baltimore region including hospitals, home health, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. She currently works as the Physical Therapy Program Head for Howard County Public Schools.
Rainey and her husband Steve, along with their three children (Quinlan 22, William 20, Henry 20) moved to Mt. Airy in 2013 and shortly thereafter found St. James’. Rainey has enjoyed serving St. James’ as a nursery volunteer, youth group helper, reader, coffee hour host, acolyte helper, and general helper with whatever might be needed. All three children are currently attending college. Rainey has a love of basketball honed while at Chapel Hill. While you may hear an occasional “Go Hawks”, “Go Lynx”, or “Go Gophers”, come from the Stafford house, Rainey is still very partial to “Go Heels”!
Rainey is proud to be a part of this congregation and plans to continue to serve St. James’ and this community in any way possible.
Blix Winston
Blix and Lucy moved from Rockville to Mt. Airy in 1996 and joined St. James’ at that time. After retiring from the Food & Drug Administration Blix has worked as a regulatory consultant to the medical device industry and taught medical device regulation at Hood College in Frederick. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and graduate degrees from the University of Southern California and Loyola College. While working for FDA he also worked for fifteen years as a therapist at Affiliated Community Counselors of Rockville.
Blix has served on the Vestry several times in the last 25 years including during both transitions as Rev. Bob Herzog and Rev. Portia Hirschman retired, as well as the time we built the new church building. For several years he served as the parish’s Diocesan representative and also served on the Diocesan Commission on Ministry. He enjoys reading, giving primary attention to the Civil War and his expanding Lincoln library, woodworking, outdoor activities including gardening, hunting, fishing and boating and agrees with the sentiment expressed by A. A. Milne: “there are few things as enjoyable as messing around in boats”. He and Lucy have two daughters; Elizabeth who lives with her family in Olney, and Becky who is with the Lord.
Vestry Class of 2024-2027
Member of St. James’ Church along with wife, Karen, since moving to Mt. Airy in 1986. We have 3 adult children who attended Sunday School at the church. I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio earning a BA in History and that is where I met Karen who graduated with a teaching degree. Retired in 2022 from work at Lowes in Frederick. Previously had worked in sales of data communications products.
Over the years at St. James’ I have served on the Vestry, served on a minister search committee and served as an usher. For the past 15 years I have served as the church coordinator with the Red Cross which holds blood drives at St. James’ twice a year.
Since retiring Karen and I travel frequently to visit family, that being our son, Brandon and his family in Frederick, our daughter, Katie and her family in Pennsylvania, our son, Bill in San Diego (visiting once a year), Karen’s siblings in Ohio, and my mother in Virginia. We enjoy hiking outdoors and working in our yard.
It has been great worshiping Christ at St. James’ Church over the years, and there we have enjoyed getting to know many fantastic people. St. James’ is a great place to find a wonderful church family.
Chris Henyon grew up in Idaho. After graduating from nursing school in Portland, Oregon her and a classmate decided to check out life in Washington DC. It was there that she met Mike Henyon, yes the nurse fireman clichés…but it worked…30 years later and they are still happily married! In July of 2000 the Henyon’s with their three children moved to Mount Airy Maryland.
Chris was raised in the Catholic Church and after marrying Mike transitioned to the Episcopal Church. She has always found comfort and strength being a Christian. Soon after moving to Mt Airy the Henyon’s noticed this cute little church on the corner of Main and Buffalo. They went there for service one Sunday and have never looked back. St James’ gave them a community when they knew no one and was a huge influence in raising all three of their children. It was bitter sweet leaving that old church but it has been wonderful watching St. James’ grow and flourish. Over the years Chris has participated in multiple ministries: Sunday school, youth group, nursery, coffee hour hostess, chalice server, alter guild, and Thrift Shop board chair.
Chris is currently a nurse at Frederick Health Hospital. You will find her most mornings at Health Unlimited trying to hedge off aging and immobility. Chris loves to read, loves her dogs, spends a lot of time in her gardens during the summer, and every winter you will find her skiing on the slopes in Idaho.
Carla Kaufman has been a member of St. James’ since 2009. She was born and raised in Cumberland, MD. She now lives in Damascus, MD with her husband Tom.
Carla is a graduate of Frostburg State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She also graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a master’s degree in Special Education. She is employed as a special education teacher at Sherwood High School in Montgomery County.
Carla is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Claggett Center in Adamstown, MD. She has also served on Diocesan Council representing the Frederick region.
In her spare time, Carla enjoys crafts and sewing. During the summer, she enjoys camping with her husband, Tom.
