A Sabbatical Prayer
Guide us, Lord, as we all journey through the months ahead together.
Help us to walk trustingly in faith with our parish family and to serve one another humbly.
May we always be aware of your presence and direction in all we do.
Be with Kristin+, Zachary, and Jasper and give them joy and contentment as they travel, and return them safely to us. Amen.

Vestry
We thank Natalie DelRegno, our Treasurer, for working with our business manager and volunteers to conduct an audit of our church finances using newly-issued diocesan guidelines. Thanks to Jane Barger, Deb Schaeffer, and Kathy McKaig-Rak for giving their time to review the finances of our church. We conduct audits of the finances at our church, thrift shop, and nursery school annually. If you are willing to assist in one of our three audits next year please contact Natalie DelRegno.
We thank our Scouts for moving and spreading mulch into the Nursery School playground. Those of us who’ve ever done this before in our yards understand it’s a big job. We really appreciate the assistance from our Scouts and Scout Leaders.
Our Thrift Shop is reviewing candidates for a part-time personnel manager. They advertised the position description, received responses from multiple candidates, vetted the resumes, and conducted interviews. The personnel manager will take on some of the responsibilities that have been performed by volunteers Cheryl Windsor, Deb Schaeffer, and Chris Henyon ever since the previous manager had to leave.
The outreach committee is beginning to prepare packages for our folks heading off to college. Contact Gabby Markham if you’d like to assist.
An arborist at Bartlett Tree Experts looked at our ailing honey locust tree in the memorial garden. They took soil samples and root samples and evaluated them in a lab. The the arborist recommended three remedial actions. The vestry reviewed the suggestions and (with professional guidance from vestry member Jason Kilmore) and we decided to move forward with two of the three suggestions. The dappled shade in the memorial garden is nice.
The vestry is revising and restructuring our parish employee handbooks. This activity is overdue, it’s been tabled for a year or few. Someone in our congregation offered to have their human resources department look over what we currently have in place for the church, the thrift shop, and the nursery school. They suggested that we have a single handbook for employees in all three organizations with procedure manuals unique to each of the three entities. This will ensure consistency for employees in all three entities. We plan to complete work on the parish-wide handbook for the vestry’s approval in September and then begin work on the individual manuals.
Enjoy summer and bring back a post card or photo from your travels to pin on our sabbatical sign board.
Thrift Shop
St. James’ Thrift Shop has a brand new look! We have new signage on the front of the building and large red letters spelling “St. James’ Thrift Shop” across the front doors. Thank you to the town for the grant they offered us which made our cost one-half less!
The Management Team at the shop asked for help from parishioners to be part of an interview team to help select a new personnel manager for the shop. We have had a number of applicants and will have a total of six that have been interviewed. We hope to have a new manager soon.
Things are going well at the shop, but we could always use more volunteers; especially from our church.
Basket Raffle
Our 16th Annual Basket Raffle & Silent Auction will be held during Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 24th at our Thrift Shop in downtown Mt. Airy.
Event Volunteers will be needed to
- assist with ticket sales before and during the Basket Raffle & Silent Auction,
- assist with transporting baskets from St. James’ Church to our Thrift Shop,
- set up tents and tables,
- return all items to the church after the event,
- draw the winning tickets then call the winners of Baskets and Silent Auction items, and
- be available for customers to pick up their baskets and silent auction items.
Whew!! Please seriously consider volunteering some of your time to help make our largest fundraiser a success once again!
Thank you so much to those who have already donated items, as well as their time and talents!!
