Bishop’s Annual Ministries Appeal

Every year we have the opportunity to give to the Bishop’s Annual Ministries Appeal to serve various ministry initiatives around the diocese. Through the programs supported by the Appeal our diocese helps in incredible ways, from assisting immigrants to get settled into a new life and home (ERICA), to providing opportunities for our youth to learn new skills (Sutton Scholars, Claggett Camps, Reading Camps, Youth Ministry), to offering spiritual care and guidance to communities across the diocese (Latino Ministries, Hopkins Chaplaincy, Seafarers’ Center), and more.

This year the Bishop’s Annual Ministry Appeal will support more than just our collective diocesan ministries. For the first time it will also support our parish too! St. James’ will receive 15% back of every dollar raised by our parishioners to further the ministries of our church. After a robust conversation at our last meeting, the vestry has chosen to designate any funds received toward Outreach ministries.

I hope you will join me in coming together as a community of love on Bishop’s Appeal Sunday, May 1, to support our parish and the ministries of our diocese. On that day we will have bulletin inserts with information about ways to give, as well as brochures detailing the diocesan programs. Together we can create a community of love.

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+

Nursery School

It has been a busy but fun month at St. James’ Nursery School. The Scholastic book fair brought out many students and their families. It was a successful event for the school and the money raised will go towards supplies and books for the upcoming school year.

One big change this past month has been that parents are now allowed to enter the building for preschool pickup. The parents have loved being able to see the classrooms and the artwork lining the hallway that the children have made. Currently drop off is still outside with temperatures of the students being taken.

With the school year coming to an end many fun activities are planned for the children. This past week the teachers arranged Easter crafts and egg hunts. At the end of April the classes will take field trips to Clark Eliok farm in Ellicott City. While there they will be able to meet and pet the animals and enjoy all the farm has to offer. As an end of the year celebration a snowball truck will be visiting in May. The 4’s classes will graduate June 1 at Watkins park.

The three-week summer program is filling up fast. Many fun and educational activities are being planned including puppet shows and Soccer shots.

Basket Raffle

16th Basket Raffle and Silent Auction

VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS REQUESTED

Your Basket Raffle Committee is in the pre-planning stages for the big event in downtown Mt. Airy on September 24th.

For those who are new, this year will be our 16th Annual Basket Raffle and Silent Auction.  Our committee creates large beautifully filled themed baskets to raffle, as well as, we have many special items displayed in the Church for our Silent Auction.  This event is an exciting and important fundraiser for our Church.

As you are doing your Spring cleaning, please consider donating any items in good condition that may be suitable for men, women, or children of all ages.  Some of our previous basket themes have been for babies, teens, teachers, pets, game/movie night, spa, jewelry, tea time, taco night, crab feast, sports memorabilia, fishing, golf, car wash/auto supplies, cooking, gardening, birding, crafts, tools, healthcare, exercise and inspirational.

Items for the Silent Auction would be those that would generate higher bids by themselves rather than as a part of a basket.  Such items could include paintings, quilts, unopened perfume, fine jewelry or high-value gift certificates, and the like.

The “Basket Brigade” will begin our creations in July.  We would like to invite anyone interested in joining us to learn and enjoy our creation process to please contact Marilyn at Ladyzip2004@yahoo.com.  We are in need of individuals to help with, not only the basket creation process, but wrapping the baskets, making bows, making phone calls to businesses, picking up business donations and many other small tasks leading up to the event.  Thank you, in advance, for helping us in any way you are able with our greatest fun fundraiser!!
