From the Rector

Supporting Students through C.A.M.P. at the Claggett Center

The Spirit has been on the move with the folks at the Claggett Center who this fall launched the Claggett Academic Mentoring Program (C.A.M.P.) to provide essential childcare and educational services for students grades K-8 and their families as they navigate virtual learning.

Following CDC guidelines they’re offering Monday-Friday programs during school hours in small group formats for educational support, recreation, and mentoring. The C.A.M.P. program has filled a need in Frederick County, and to mirror the percentage of students enrolled in free or reduced meal programs, over a quarter of the openings have been prioritized to provide scholarships, meals, computers, WIFI access, and learning support.

To fully cover the cost of this amazing program Claggett is seeking donations. At our recent Vestry meeting we learned that sponsoring one particular student for the fall semester, after their family contributed what they are able, would be $325/week or $3,438 in full. Together we decided to make a donation of $500 from the Rector’s Discretionary Fund on behalf of St. James’. Individual members of the Vestry and I have also committed to make contributions totaling $1,175 to date.

If you are moved to give to support students through this program, or if your employer is looking for a worthy cause to give towards, please know that any amount will be gratefully received and will make a real difference in the life of a local family as we navigate these uncertain times. Checks can be made out to The Claggett Center, with Mentoring Program in the memo line, and mailed to 3035 Buckeystown Pike, Adamstown, MD 21710.

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+
