Introducing our DOV Intern

I am excited to share that this fall we will once again be welcoming a DOV Intern at St. James’.  Please join me in welcoming Nancy Smith this Sunday 9/13.

DOV (Discerning Ordained Vocation) is the second year of the process in the Diocese of Maryland for people discerning a call to ordained ministry.  As a part of the DOV program, participants disengage from their home parish and spend 4 months serving at another parish.  The value of the internship is that it allows folks to participate in a different parish to help discern if their call is to serve in the church writ large.  So often we love “the church” because we love “our church.”  When we begin to discern a call to ordained ministry, we have in the back of our minds that serving “the church” means serving a congregation just like “our church.”  And yet for all that we are a people of common prayer, every parish is different, with varied core identities and charisms.  Learning and leading in a new parish is a helpful way to clarify this sense of call.

Goals for the internship include preaching, pastoral care, attending a Vestry meeting, participating in Outreach, assisting in liturgy planning, and meeting with a Parish Lay Committee (PLC) made up of members of the parish for reflection and feedback.  Because all of this looks different during the pandemic, this internship will also look different – a great way to learn ministry in real time!

Please read below for an introduction from Nancy, and whether you see her in person at our outdoor Eucharist or over Zoom for online worship or meetings, I hope you’ll give her the fabulous St. James’ welcome.

Yours in God’s peace, Kristin+

From Nancy

I was born in Frankfurt, Germany.  Before moving to Maryland in 2002, I lived in Germany, Belgium, and Northern Virginia.  I now live in Dayton, MD, with two kids, one grandkid, four dogs, two cats, and a fish.  My daughter works for a medical practice in the Sinai network in Baltimore; my son works for Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia; and my granddaughter is entering the sixth grade (how in the world did that happen?). I love to read, do crosswords, and do things with my hands (cooking, gardening, mowing, crocheting, painting walls, tilework, etc.).

My current spiritual home is St. Mark’s, Highland.  I am the Ministries Coordinator & Administrator at St. Andrew’s, Glenwood.

I am grateful to Kristin+ and this congregation for receiving me as an intern, and for walking with me on this part of my spiritual journey.  I look forward to learning with you!

Sunday Worship Information

IN PERSON WORSHIP

We will gather at 8:30 am outside for Holy Eucharist in the Memorial Garden and field.  All attendees must abide by the provisions of the Covenant for Regathering, including:

  • wearing a mask
  • maintaining physical distancing from those not in your household
  • only attending when non-symptomatic for COVID-19 or any other transmittable disease
  • abstaining from attending if doing so would put you at greater risk because of your own health status

To attend outside worship please plan to bring your own chairs or blanket.  You will be asked to spread out in the field facing the building, keeping at least 8 feet between households – so consider hats or an umbrella for shade.  While this will be a service with Holy Communion (wafers only), you are free to choose if you feel comfortable receiving the sacrament.

If outside worship needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather a decision will be made by 4:00 pm the day before when possible, and if it needs to be cancelled, an email will be sent out.  In the case of unanticipated bad weather, including rain which would inhibit our ability to use sound amplification, an update will be posted to our Facebook page by 7:30 am the morning of.  You can check our Facebook page for updates.

ONLINE WORSHIP

A printable bulletin is available here.

We will “open the doors” beginning at 10:15 am for folks to greet each other and say good morning.  Kristin+ will give instructions at 10:25 am and we will begin recording and livestreaming the service promptly at 10:30 am.  Don’t worry if you’re late – you can still attend via Zoom if you “get to church” at 10:40!
