Vestry

When I received a call 3 years ago asking me to join Vestry, my first instinct was to run and hide under a rock!  I am in the education field and I don’t know much about running a business or interpreting financial information.  I was told, “What we really need are people who are willing to listen, pray and guide the church.” I decided I could do that and joined in January of 2017.  I am really glad I did.  I have gained a new appreciation for the time and talent that goes into running our church as well as getting a chance to guide new opportunities for our church.  I get to interact with other church members and share laughter and occasional meals!  What I love about Vestry meetings is that we start and end with prayer.  After a hectic work day, it is so nice to sit down with others and have quiet prayer time.  We also have a short Bible study as part of our meetings.  Once a year, we have a Vestry retreat.  I should just call it a Vestry “treat” because that is what it is.  We get to spend one night and one whole day learning about each other and discussing topics important to St. James. I really enjoy the conversations I’ve had with other members during these retreats. We are now taking nominations for new Vestry members (see forms in the Narthex).  I really hope that you will consider joining because your opinion is important in guiding our church and I think you will enjoy leading our St. James community. So, think about it.  Are you willing to “listen, pray and guide the church?” Jeannie Pellicier, Senior Warden

Worship & Prayer

The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is full of beautiful language and prayer forms like this:

A Collect for Guidance
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

These prayers are wonderful vessels for carrying and shaping our intentions as we go about our day.  They can help deepen our spirituality, and help us to be more loving.  They can reduce anxiety, and smooth out our rough spots.  Please com join me to explore how the BCP can be used to develop a healthy and vibrant prayer practice.  I am planning two sessions in the coming weeks to begin our exploration of the Daily Office.  The first one will be Saturday November 2nd at 10 AM.  The second session will be Sunday November 10th after the 10:30 AM service.

In each session, I will give a brief introduction to the form and structure of the Daily Office, and then we will practice together.  At the end, we will plan ahead to schedule other opportunities, and figure out how to make it as accessible to as many folks as possible.  For example, we might try a regularly scheduled time once a week to do Morning Prayer together at St James, and use Zoom to make it possible for people to join remotely.

All are welcome!

Send me an email at tommy.turbyville@gmail.com to let me know you are coming, or if you have any questions.

Kristin if you’d like an electronic copy of the calendar.
