UPDATE: The Maryland Diocesan Resolution 2018-2 – Offer Caring, Practical Response to the Opioid Crisis in Our Communities
On October 10, 2018, four individuals from St. James’, Janet McKeever, Meghan McKeever, Katie McKeever, and Rev. Kristin, attended a training hosted by Frederick County Behavioral Health Services on how to recognize, respond, and administer a life saving overdose reversal substance known as Naloxone/Narcan. I have taken the training online. A recent Baltimore Sun article indicates opioid overdoses in Maryland increased 14.8 percent in first six months of 2018.
As a part of the training we received free Narcan kits, which have been placed upstairs with the first aid kit in the main office and downstairs with the first aid kit on top of the refrigerator, in the event we need to care for someone in our community that may be experiencing the effects of an overdose.
We are reminded in the bible that our call is to care for those in need. We are to seek out the lost, the sick, and the widowed and orphaned. Substance abuse is often hidden in the shadows of society. Please know that if you or someone you know has a substance use problem there is help. The number for Frederick County Health Services is 301-600-1755. If you or someone you know would like to receive Naloxone/Narcan training online the hyper link for training is www.getnaloxonenow.org.
